Why the "Goldilocks" Bike?

Introduced in 1974 to succeed the CB500 Four, the Honda CB550 hit a legendary sweet spot in Honda's Universal Japanese Motorcycle (UJM) lineup. It combined the lightweight agility of smaller bikes with the smooth, highway-capable power of Honda's flagship CB750.

CB350F / CB400F

Light and agile around town, but struggled to hold effortless 70+ mph cruising speeds on long highway stints.

CB550 Four

The Sweet Spot. Smooth 544cc inline-four, lightweight chassis, near-CB750 power with nimble flickability.

CB750 Four

The original Superbike. Powerful and smooth, but top-heavy and bulky when maneuvering in city traffic.

Carburetor Overhaul & Synchronization

Ultra-sonic cleaned all four Keihin 22mm slide carburetors. Replaced worn float needles, main jets (#100), and slow jets (#38). Performed bench sync followed by dynamic vacuum gauge sync at idle (1,050 RPM).
Parts & Materials: Keyster Carb Rebuild Kits (x4), OEM Float Bowl Gaskets, Motion Pro Sync Gauge Set.
Front Brake Caliper & Master Cylinder Refresh

Rebuilding the front single-disc hydraulic brake assembly to fix a sticking piston. Caliper housing stripped and repainted with high-temp engine enamel. Replacing original rubber brake line with stainless braided hose for better lever feel.
Parts & Materials: OEM Caliper Piston & Seal Kit, Stainless Braided Front Brake Line, DOT 4 Fluid.
Electronic Ignition Upgrade (Dyna S)
Future Planned Planned
Plan to swap the factory points and condensers for an electronic Dyna S ignition system to eliminate point bounce and frequent timing adjustments.
Parts Needed: Dynatek DS1-1 Electronic Ignition, Dyna 3.0 Ohm Coils & Spark Plug Wires.
